‘Wasim Akram is a Banker’ WATCH as Pakistan great tells rib-tickling Bay 13 story

Historically, Bay 13 has held a unique status at the MCG, unofficially contributing to the ground's vibrant atmosphere.

In the illustrious world of cricket, tales of banter and camaraderie often echo through the hallowed stadiums. Recently, Pakistan’s legendary pacer, Wasim Akram, shared a rib-tickling story during a radio commentary, recounting a memorable encounter with the spirited Aussie crowd at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

The story unfolds during Wasim Akram early days as a young and fiery pacer touring Australia. Fielding in front of the infamous Bay 13, a section renowned for rowdy spectators and their lively antics, Akram found himself amid some unique Aussie banter. Bay 13 was more than just a seating area; it was a cricketing cultural phenomenon known for Mexican waves, beach ball throwing, and, occasionally, disorderly conduct directed at opposition players.

After a stellar performance where Akram secured a five-wicket haul, the Bay 13 crowd, known for its exuberance, began chanting “W**ker” in good-natured jest. However, lost in translation due to his still-developing Australian accent, Akram thought they were praising him. Because of the PG-13 language, Wasim Akram told in the commentary box that they were calling him ‘Wasim is a Banker.’

Amused and unaware of the crowd’s actual intention, Akram shared his joy with his captain, the legendary Imran Khan. It was then that the truth dawned upon him. Khan, with a chuckle, revealed the real meaning behind the chant. The revelation led to a burst of laughter, both on and off the field.

Wasim Akram is not alone in Bay 13 banter

Historically, Bay 13 has held a unique status at the MCG, unofficially contributing to the ground’s vibrant atmosphere. Iconic images of the crowd mimicking Merv Hughes’ warm-up stretches in front of Bay 13 have become part of cricket folklore.

Through the decades, Bay 13 became an integral part of Australian cricket culture. However, changes in seating arrangements in 2008, coupled with increased security measures, altered the character of Bay 13. The spontaneous camaraderie that defined the area in the past was replaced with a more controlled environment. In 2019, the Bay 13 area transformed, giving way to the “Boundary Social” zone with higher-priced tickets, a dress code, and a private bar.

Wasim Akram story not only provides a glimpse into the humorous side of on-field banter but also serves as a nostalgic ode to the bygone era of cricket where Bay 13 stood as a symbol of Australian cricket fanatics’ unwavering support, even if their chants were occasionally lost in translation.
