Wasim Akram fires warning to Jasprit Bumarh ahead of Asia Cup, says 50-format will test him

Jasprit Bumrah last played ODI for India in July 2022. Wasim Akram believes Asia Cup will determine the India speedster's game preparedness ahead of World Cup

While Jasprit Bumrah’s stellar comeback is lauded by all, legendary cricketer Wasim Akram believes the true test of the Indian speedster’s game preparedness will be tested during Asia Cup 2023 event. This year’s continental cup will be played in 50-format due to the World Cup being around the corner. Bumrah made his comeback in the Ireland T20 series and bowled only eight overs.

Bumrah last played ODI against England in Lord’s in July 2022. It’s been more than a year that he has not played ODI, and Akram feels it is here where Bumrah’s skills will be tested fully as he will bowl 10 overs regularly as opposed to bowling only four overs. “Be it India or Pakistan Sri Lanka, we will find out if the bowlers are able to deliver 10 overs or not, now-a-days they are all used to bowling fours-overs (per game),” Akram told reporters during a tournament sponsor’s event.

Akram also stated that it is a good idea by ACC to have the Asia Cup in a 50-overs format as it will give all six teams, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Afghanistan a chance to prepare for the World Cup. The former Pakistan pacer believes all six teams will tested on the parameters of fitness and game plans.

Jasprit Bumrah: Why Wasim Akram feels Bumrah’s fitness will be tested during Asia Cup

Bumrah has not played an ODI for over a year. After a back injury, the MI pacer has made a comeback to the Indian team, after 11 months and has played 2 T20Is.
The MI pacer clocked 145kmph and maintained tight line and lengths.
However, he bowled only 24 balls in both games and could be effective.
In 50 overs format Bumrah will be required to bowl 10 overs. Also, he has to maintain the same intensity in his first, second, and third spells.
Akram opines this is where Bumrah’s fitness and mental fortitude will be tested.

Akram also refused to pick any favorites for Asia Cup and said all three teams India, Pakistan, & Sri Lanka, are dangerous. The cricketing expert also feels India have a good balanced side as they are trying different things and combinations. India kick off Asia Cup by playing against Pakistan on September 2 in Kandy.
