Washington Sundar reveals his preferred batting position, says “it’s definitely fun..”

Till now, despite playing 41 innings in the IPL, Washington Sundar has batted a handful of times in the top order.

India all-rounder Washington Sundar has been bit of mystery. Despite possessing all the talent in the world, and winning games for the country, neither has he been a regular in the national side, nor has he gotten enough match-time in the IPL, during the last eight years, after playing his first in 2017.

Washington Sundar’s Limited Opportunities in IPL

At least in the IPL, the impact-sub rule could be the culprit, where teams don’t shy away from getting another batter, instead of an all-rounder. That means, in all these years, he has just played 61 matches, where he has picked up 37 wickets, and scored 427 runs only.

In IPL 2025 as well, he has just played a solitary match, where he scored 49 in 29. But then, not playing is hardly any issue for Washington Sundar, since training well keeps him match ready always. In an interview with the Times of India, he opened up on the same issue, and how he prefers to bat in the top/middle order, instead of the lower order, where he usually gets the chance.

“It’s not too difficult (to miss matches and make a comeback), honestly, because we get to practice every single day,” Washi told the publication. “We get to do what we want and work on different aspects of the game. So, finding the rhythm and staying on top of the game is within my control. If I give 100 percent in every single session, then I will find the best rhythm and the best belief system. It’s all about the purpose I bring to each practice session.”

All-rounder Reveals Preferred Batting Spot

Out of the 41 innings he has batted in the IPL, he has opened once, at No. 3 too has played one innings, at No. 4 it’s two innings, and at No. 5 it’s just three. “It’s definitely fun to bat at the top because you get more balls and more opportunities to score big runs. But it’s also exciting to go in when the team needs you to perform at your best and win the game,” Washi added.

“It’s all about trying to win the game for the team, no matter the situation. But at the same time, it’s so much fun to bat at the top and face swing, speed, and quality spin. Trying to maximise my abilities in those situations definitely makes me happy.”
