The much-awaited Test series, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, is two months away, but the verbal war between Australia and India has already begun. Players from both teams are ready to challenge each other on the field. In the latest exchange of words, Australia’s opener, Travis Head, stated that India is not the favourite to win the trophy this year.
This statement came after Mohammed Shami said, “India is the favourite to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In the last series in Australia, we played with a young team, but we won and proved we were the best. So, I feel India will be victorious in this BGT as well.”
Travis Head on Team India
In an interview with Star Sports, Head mentioned that he does not see India as the favourites because Australia has played against them frequently. “I don’t view them as the favourites. We play them often, and I’ve been in good form over the past few years. It’s always nice to perform well. The competitive nature of the contests makes it easy to stay motivated. So, I wouldn’t say they’re my favourites,” Head said.
“They are extremely challenging opponents, but it’s been rewarding to perform well in a few games. I’m looking forward to preparing thoroughly and contributing to a successful summer for us,” he added.
India’s dominance in BGT
In recent years, India has consistently edged over Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, winning the last four consecutive series, including two historic victories on Australian soil during the 2018-19 and 2020-21 seasons.
This dominance has established India as a formidable force in the rivalry, with India securing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy ten times, while Australia has won it only five times, their last victory coming in the 2014-15 season. Australia’s last series win in India was in the 2004-05 season.
