Wanindu Hasaranga steps down as Sri Lanka T20 captain before IND vs SL white-ball series

Wanindu Hasaranga has captained Sri Lanka across 10 T20Is, winning six of those and losing four.

Wanindu Hasaranga has resigned as the captain of the Sri Lankan T20I team, just days before their upcoming series against India starting from July 26. This comes after Sri Lanka’s disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup 2024, where they were knocked out in the group stage.

First coach, now captain!

Hasaranga’s decision follows the resignation of head coach Chris Silverwood, who also stepped down after the World Cup debacle. Former cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya has been named as the interim coach for the upcoming India series.

The all-rounder, who had impressive performances in the Lanka Premier League (LPL), was expected to replicate that success at the international level. However, he was unable to turn the tide for Sri Lanka in the World Cup.

Taking responsibility for the team’s performance, Hasaranga stated in his resignation letter that he gave his best effort but it wasn’t enough. Despite stepping down from captaincy, he has pledged his continued support for the team. “Sri Lanka will always have my utmost best efforts as a player, and I will support and stand by my team and leadership as always,” Hasaranga said.

Sri Lanka Cricket is yet to announce Hasaranga’s replacement. With the squad for the India series due to be announced soon, speculation suggests Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka are frontrunners for the captaincy, while Dasun Shanaka’s return to the role seems unlikely.
