Voice of Fans: Mumbai Indians faithful don’t want Rohit Sharma to be retained ahead of IPL 2025

Will Rohit Sharma be retained by Mumbai Indians for IPL 2025? Or will the Rohit-MI bond that, probably took a hit in IPL 2024, continue to add more chapters.

Mumbai Indians (MI) have been one of those rare teams who have not liked the concept of a mega auction. It is simply because they are always spoilt for choices on who all to retain under BCCI’s retention policies. Similarly, they will be under the pump come the October 31, retention deadline for IPL 2025. A team filled with superstars, MI have too many egos to satisfy. They have their skipper and India’s premier all-rounder Hardik Pandya. They have their biggest face and pillar of Indian cricket, Rohit Sharma. Not to forget India’s T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav and the world’s best bowler Jasprit Bumrah.

What do MI fans say on Rohit Sharma & his retention?

Undeniably, MI have a task cut for them. Who will be their top-most retention? Will they retain Rohit Sharma after removing him from the captaincy last season? Will all four Indian superstars want to be retained at the Rs 18 crore slab? Well, we asked the fans themselves. Insidesport conducted a poll on X (formerly known as Twitter), asking “Which set of players Mumbai Indians should retain? Below were the combinations, involving Hardik, Rohit, Bumrah and Suryakumar. Surprisingly, as many as 44.2% of voters didn’t want Rohit Sharma!

The second-most elected choice was the combination of Rohit/SKY and Bumrah, indicating some fans still do not want Pandya in the MI setup. On the other hand, the least favourite option for the fans was the trio of Rohit/Hardik and Suryakumar. This is simply because MI can’t contain itself without the services of Bumrah. After all, Bumrah has been the one-man army for them as far as bowling is concerned. His worth its weight in gold.

Bye-bye, Rohit Sharma?

Rohit Sharma, a long-standing captain of the Mumbai Indians, may actually be on the verge of departure. The team’s recent leadership change to Hardik Pandya, after his return from the Gujarat Titans (GT), was a major giveaway that things might not be rosy between Rohit and MI. Also, Rohit even had a fan interaction where he asked the fan about where he (the fan) would like to see him in IPL 2025.

Rohit has been an integral part of Mumbai Indians (MI) since the team’s inception in 2008. Under his leadership, the franchise has clinched five IPL titles, making them one of the join-most successful teams in the tournament’s history. However, the recent downturn in the team’s fortunes, coupled with the change in captaincy, has left everyone guessing about Rohit’s future.

Before the IPL 2024 season, Mumbai Indians surprised many by appointing Hardik Pandya as the new captain, replacing Rohit. The decision was met with mixed reactions from fans, with some expressing their disappointment at Rohit’s removal. The team’s performance on the field worsened Pandya’s leadership as MI finished with a wooden spoon in IPL 2024.
