Virat Kohli’s Ranji Trophy participation a punishment posting than privilege? Chopra thinks so

Virat Kohli is playing his first Rnaji Trophy match after a span of 12 years

Former India Cricketer Aakash Chopra is not at all happy with how the Indian stars have played in the Ranji Trophy. He has called out the Indian stars claiming they are playing the domestic tournament as a punishment posting. Aakash Chopra believes that there is nothing wrong with playing domestic cricket and it should be treated like a privilege.

Aakash Chopra has equated Indian stars playing Ranji Trophy as marking their attendance and leaving. The India Cricket Team regulars had the option of playing 2 Ranji Trophy games. However, most of the players have opted to play just a single game rather than playing both games.

Making attendance and Leaving

“Virat Kohli is playing, but many others are not, like Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal or Shreyas Iyer. Ultimately, all the players have played their token Ranji Trophy match, marked their attendance and left. Virat Kohli hadn’t played that round, so he is playing now. What does it tell you? This (playing Ranji Trophy) was a bit of a punishment posting. But playing first-class cricket shouldn’t be a punishment, it should be a privilege,” Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

After the disappointing losses against New Zealand and the Border Gavaskar Trophy, India lost out on a chance to reach the WTC Finals. The players, especially the batters failed to perform. This prompted the BCCI to issue a mandate where participating in domestic cricket was compulsory.

As a result, Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant played in the previous group stage game. However, these 4 batters have left themselves out for this game round to prepare for the IND vs ENG ODI series. Virat Kohli and KL Rahul missed the previous game and are thus playing this week.

Aakash Chopra was displeased at this. He claimed that playing domestic cricket should be a privilege for these players. Instead, these Indian stars are treating this like a punishment treatment. Only Ravindra Jadeja is the sole player who has played both games.
