The upcoming IND vs AUS series will be make or break for Virat Kohli, who has been in poor red-ball form for a few years now. He was pathetic in the IND vs NZ series, where spinners got the better of him, and averaged 13 against them. In his last 14 matches, he has only two hundreds and three fifty scores, since Feb 2022.
Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting believes, Virat Kohli‘s dip in form is concerning, but he can still turnaround his fortunes. “I saw a stat the other day about Virat, it said he’s only scored two (three) Test hundreds in the last five years.
“That didn’t seem right to me, but if that is right, then that is, I mean, that’s a concern. There wouldn’t be anyone else probably even playing international cricket as a top-order batsman that’s only scored two Test match hundreds in five years,” Ponting said on the latest episode of ICC Review.
“There’s no doubt, he’s a great of the game. He loves playing against Australia. In fact, I know he loves playing against Australia. And as I said, his record (in Australia) is very good. If there’s a time for him to turn it around, it’d be this series. So I wouldn’t be surprised to see Virat make runs in the first game,” he added.
For the record, in the last 34 Tests Virat Kohli has only scored 1838 runs at an average of 31.68. If he doesn’t perform in this series, it could well be his last in Tests, since the BCCI has already decided to take a call on his Test future. In fact, not just him, but the BCCI is seriously considering the future of Rohit Sharma, R Ashwin, and even Ravindra Jadeja, in the team.
