Virat Kohli’s 100th Test: Shastri- Kohli still capable of scoring 100 tons Former India coach Ravi Shastri has no doubt that Virat Kohli is able to break Sachin Tendulkar’s 100 centuries record despite him not being able to hit one since November 2019. “Given his level of fitness, I think Kohli is perfectly capable of carrying on for another five-six years. This means you are looking at around five centuries in a year – which is not impossible given the team will be playing around 10 Tests in a year and 20 other international matches,’’ he told Gulf News.

‘‘Every player needs to change with time to survive in top-flight cricket, even Tendulkar did it. One may not be as dominant as before and need to play the waiting game if need be – this may mean settling down for the first 30-35 minutes before opening up,’’ he added.

  • The right-handed batter had made his debut in the longest format way back in 2011 against West Indies and 11 years later, he has come a long way.
  • 27 Test centuries later in the longest format, the batter knows how to score big and shut out the outside noise to perform better
  • He had last scored a century in international cricket in 2019 against Bangladesh and since then, the entire nation is waiting eagerly for the batter to register his 71st ton.
  • One can just hope he registers the milestone in his 100th Test and if it does happen, it would mean that the stars truly aligned for a once in a generation batter.

Ravi Shastri feels that a purple patch is near in the post-captaincy era for Kohli. He said that all the great players had to go through tough times and they only came back stronger.

‘‘I am confident that Kohli will turn the corner soon and there will be no looking back. All great players have been through these so-called lean patches, be it a Sachin Tendulkar or Viv Richards, but they always come back stronger from that phase,’’ Shastri further stated.

He also lauded Kohli’s average of 50+ across all three formats of the game. He credited his fitness as a major catalyst to his success in international cricket.

‘‘This has been possible due to his consistency and work ethic. Just ponder this – that despite the talk of his lean patch over the last two years, Kohli is the only batsman in world cricket with a 50-plus average in all three formats of the game,’’ Shastri concluded.
