Virat Kohli to return as India’s captain? Gilchrist says ‘King’ won’t mind leading on England Test Tour

Virat Kohli led Team India in Sydney in the absence of captain Jasprit Bumrah; however, his last match as full-time skipper was in January 2022.

Virat Kohli won’t mind being named the India cricket team’s Test captain once again. That’s what former Australia captain Adam Gilchrist suggests. Despite his poor form, the renowned wicketkeeper thinks the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) might take away the leadership of the Test team from Rohit Sharma and hand it to Kohli for the India vs England Test series.

Why Jasprit Bumrah can’t be India’s Test captain

Gilchrist’s reasoning is simple: He thinks Jasprit Bumrah is a great option. The pacer led Team India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 twice and ended with a 1-1 record. However, midway through the last match in Sydney, Bumrah injured his back and had to be taken off the field.

As of now, it’s uncertain whether he’ll be fit for the ICC Champions Trophy. His fitness is exactly why Gilchrist thinks Bumrah can’t be the captain. “I don’t know whether Bumrah should be full-time captain. I reckon that might get a little bit challenging for him,” Gilchrist said on the Club Prairie Fire podcast.

Virat Kohli to captain India once again?

That’s why the wicketkeeper suggests Virat Kohli’s name as the next Test captain of Team India. He’s one of the most successful skippers in the history of the games and definitely the greatest Indian captain in red-ball cricket. To revive his Test career, Kohli might put his hand up and lead Team India once again.

So, who that next captain may be is anyone’s guess, really, whether they go back to Virat. I wouldn’t be surprised if he wouldn’t mind doing it,” Gilchrist added.
