Virat Kohli in Delhi’s Ranji Trophy 2024-25 probable squad, Ishant Sharma excluded

Kohli hasn't played first-class cricket for Delhi since the 2012-13 Ranji Trophy season.

Virat Kohli has been included in Delhi’s Ranji Trophy probable list for the first time in the 2019-20 season. Earlier in the month, the former Indian captain was exempt from playing in the Duleep Trophy 2024 to avoid risking an injury by the BCCI. Due to the hectic schedule, he’ll skip the first leg of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season, which starts on October 11.

Virat Kohli in Ranji Trophy 2024-25?

The Indian cricket team is currently in Kanpur preparing for the India vs Bangladesh 2nd Test, and following a two-week rest, the 3-match Test series against New Zealand will begin on October 16. According to Delhi’s Ranji Trophy schedule, the first leg of the 2024-25 season will end on November 16.

Given that the last Test against the Kiwis ends on November 5 and the first match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy is slated to begin on November 22, there isn’t a chance that Kohli will play for Delhi. However, the second leg will see Delhi play two matches (January 23 to February 2), and Kohli won’t be playing a series at the time. If he wishes to or the BCCI advices him, he might just feature for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy after more than a decade.

Ishant Sharma excluded

Kohli was among 84 players named by the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) ahead of their opening clash against Chattisgarh. Other Team India players like Rishabh Pant and Harshit Rana were also named, while veteran and Delhi legend Ishant Sharma was nowhere to be found. “A fitness test for the selected players will take place on 26th September 2024. Players currently on international duty are exempt from this fitness test,” DDCA release read.
