Virat Kohli in 2021: Chink in Kohli’s armor, 9th Successive inning Kohli gets out caught behind the stumps, will he end another year without a ton?
Ever since the 2014 England tour when James Anderson troubled Kohli in the corridor of uncertainty, the Indian Test skipper came back stronger. Till the 2014 England tour, Kohli averaged just 28 in the corridor outside off stump.
After the England tour, Kohli averaged an incredible 92 in the same corridor from 2015 to 2019. However, he has once again started to fall prey in that area.
WTC Final – Southampton –
The trend started in the WTC Final at Southampton when he poked Kyle Jamieson’s outside off short delivery and got caught by BJ Watling behind the wicket in the second innings.
England Tour 2021 – 1st Test, Nottingham –
It was one of the most awaited match-ups but it couldn’t live up to the expectations as it lasted for just one delivery. It was Virat Kohli vs James Anderson and the latter had the upper hand as he removed Kohli on the very first ball of his innings.
Anderson bowled a pitched-up delivery around the fifth-sixth stump and Kohli edged it while defending and the ball went straight into keeper Jos Buttler’s gloves.
England Tour 2021 – 2nd Test, Lords –
At Lords, Kohli was dismissed behind the wickets in both innings – first and second. In the first innings, Ollie Robinson bowled a good length delivery around the fifth-sixth stump and Kohli edged it while trying to push it through covers and was caught by Joe Root at first slip.
In the second innings, he was dismissed by Sam Curran in a similar fashion. Curran bowled a fullish delivery wide of off stump around 6th and 7th stump. Kohli who seems to now have a habit of playing away from the body nicked it on the front foot trying to push it and was caught by the keeper Jos Buttler.
England Tour 2021 – 3rd Test, Leeds –
It was again James Anderson who had the final laugh in the Kohli-Anderson matchup. Anderson bowled a full-length delivery around the fifth-sixth stump and Kohli opted for a cover drive. However, the ball changed direction and went straight to Jos Buttler’s gloves taking a thick outside edge of Kohli’s bat.
In the second innings, it was the same old story. Nicking off. Robinson bowled a length delivery outside off around the fifth stump which ideally should have been left out. But, since it was angled in, Kohli went for the defense and in the process edged it that went to Joe Root’s hand at first slip.
England Tour 2021 – 4th Test, Kennington Oval –
Ollie Robinson bowled a full-length delivery angling it in on a fourth stump line. Kohli tried to work it on the leg-side and got a faint inside edge that went straight to keeper Jonny Bairstow’s glove.
South Africa Tour 2021 – 1st Test Centurion –
It was a delivery that would have been called a wide in white-ball format. Ngidi bowled a nearly on sixth-seventh stump for the drive and Kohli goes chasing to drive it through the off-side. But, he nicks it in the process and the outside edge travels to Wiaan Mulder at first slip who makes no mistake.
