If you’re one of those Virat Kohli fans, wondering, till how long will he continue to play, the man himself gave a hint on Saturday at an event. Speaking at the RCB Innovation Lab Indian Sports Summit, organised by the RCB, while talking about the disappointment at the highest level in the sport, Virat’s answer turned a few heads.
Virat Kohli Opens up on Australia Tour
All this happened when talking about the lowest point of his career. “I can’t pinpoint one…for example, if you ask me the intensity of how disappointed I felt, for me the most recent Australia tour would be the one that’s most fresh. So it might feel the most intense to me,” Virat Kohli said.
It is important to note that despite starting off well, the 36-year-old could only return with one substantial score in the entire Australia series — hundred in the second innings at Perth. Further continuing with the answer, he added that he might not have another Australia tour to get over the disappointment.
Could Retire After 2027 World Cup
“For a long period of time the tour of England in 2014 was the thing that bothered me the most,” he said. “But I can’t look at it that way. I might not have an Australia tour again in me, in four years’ time, I don’t know. So I don’t have the chance to correct that.
“But you have to make peace with whatever’s happened in your life. Like 2014, I still had the chance to go in 2018 and do what I did. It might have not been the case, it might have been another blunder but it didn’t turn out to be that way. So there’s no such guarantees in life.”
The Good Performance Dilemma
Virat suggested that the fans also play a crucial role in all this; like it is more difficult for them to get over such a failure than the players themselves. “I think when you are at a stage for a long period of your life, when you perform and people get used to your performances, they start feeling for you more than you are sometimes,” Kohli continued. “Today as well, disappointment that you have might not be as intense as the disappointments around you.”
This might perhaps be enough indication that Virat might call it a day on his career, post the 2027 World Cup. And the Australia series would be only in end of 2028. In fact, by that time he would 40-41, and it would be highly unlikely that he’ll continue for that long. He has already announced his T20I retirement in 2024.
