It is the return of the King! Ace India Cricket Team star Virat Kohli is coming back to domestic cricket after 13 long years. Having played his last Ranji Trophy game in 2012, Kohli is now set to play for Delhi in Ranji Trophy‘s last group stage game against Railways. Thanks to his return, Ranji Trophy has become relevant again. Fans started queuing up from 3 AM to see their beloved King in action. There was a 2-km long queue.
Delhi District Cricket Association’s (DDCA) arrangement for 10,000 fans did not hold any water. Soon, they had to increase the capacity to 15,000, only to leave around 50,000 people outside the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Inside the stadium, the security arrangement was not enough. DDCA had to ask for para-military forces as a fan invaded the pitch to touch Virat Kohli’s feet. It’s a festival atmosphere in Delhi, even though it is a Ranji Trophy match. In contrast, there is hardly any crowd present in other venues. But for Kohli fans, even a weekday matters less.
2km Long queue for a Ranji Trophy Match
It has been a long time since a huge crowd turned up in a Ranji Trophy game. But things have been different when it comes to Virat Kohli. To catch a glimpse of the ace batter, Virat Kohli fans started to queue outside the stadium which became 2 km long before the start of the game.
Virat Kohli makes a comeback into domestic cricket after the BCCI issued a mandate that every international star will have to actively take part in domestic cricket. This move comes after India was handed a 3-0 whitewash at home against New Zealand. This was followed by a 3-1 humiliation in the Border Gavaskar Trophy.
India failed to reach the WTC Finals after their torrid form in red-ball cricket. Back in Australia, Virat Kohli failed to score big runs, save just an unbeaten century in Perth. He went on to manage to score 191 runs in 11 innings.
