Virat Kohli’s much-anticipated return to the Ranji Trophy after more than a decade ended on a disappointing note. He was dismissed for just 6 runs off 15 balls. Playing for his domestic side Delhi, Kohli was clean bowled by Railways fast bowler Himanshu Sangwan, who uprooted his off stump. Sangwan, visibly pumped up after claiming Kohli’s wicket, celebrated aggressively. However, that did not go down well with Kohli maniacs, who targeted Sangwan on social media, albeit the wrong Sangwan.
Instagram and other social media platforms failed to verify the names, leading to unnecessary abuse being directed at individuals named ‘Himanshu Sangwan.’ Some fans even hurled abuse at Pradeep Sangwan, who had to clarify that he is not the one hunted by the Kohli maniacs. Former Gujarat Titans pacer Sangwan was once Kohli’s teammate in Delhi. And he had to issue a note to the fans that he isn’t the one.

Many of these users were caught in the crossfire simply because they shared the same name as the Railway’s seamer. This incident highlights the downside of social media, where mistaken identities can lead to unwarranted harassment.
