Virat Kohli backed to break record for most runs in ICC Champions Trophy by RCB teammate Chris Gayle

Chris Gayle currently holds the record for most runs in the ICC Champions Trophy (791), and Virat Kohli needs 263 runs to go past the former West Indian captain.

Virat Kohli has been struggling for runs of late. His record in international cricket across the three formats hasn’t been great for the last 12 months. Everyone knows about his Test struggles, but white-ball cricket wasn’t an issue. By his standards, he had a poor T20 World Cup 2024 and wasn’t great in the ODI series against Sri Lanka.

Virat Kohli still the best, says Gayle

He also didn’t trouble the scorers in the India vs. England 2nd ODI. Questions have been asked before regarding his place in the team, although never in ODIs, but the voices of concern are getting bigger. However, Kohli’s former Royal Challengers Bengaluru teammate Chris Gayle backs him.

“He is still the best player in the world regardless of the form, Virat Kohli is still the best player, the stats prove how many centuries across formats he has scored as well. It’s just one of those things that we cricketers go through in patches. I know it is coming at the back end of his career as well, but these things do happen, so he just needs to pick himself up and come back again,” Gayle said.

Gayle confident Kohli will break his most runs in Champions Trophy record

When the all-rounder was asked about whether Kohli can break the record for the ICC Champions Trophy, he said he doesn’t have two questions about it. The former Indian captain will play at least three matches (group stage), but if Team India goes to the final, he’ll have five innings to score 263 runs and beat Gayle’s record.

“It is easy for him just to get 200 runs (263, to be exact). I don’t know how many games they will be playing, but I am sure he can get over 200 runs, and I am sure he will get a century for sure, so it’s just a matter of time before he goes on to break that record,” Gayle added.
