There has been a lot of speculation regarding the role Virat Kohli is likely to take up for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the upcoming IPL 2024. Kohli has largely played as an opener for RCB in the past years, and have scored 7 centuries in that avatar. However, former cricketers feel Kohli batting at number 3 this time around will not be such a bad idea.
The most seasoned player for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Virat Kohli, could be a good choice to bat at number 3 in order to give their batting lineup a little more diversity. according to former Indian opener Aakash Chopra.
“I feel that Virat Kohli will play at No. 3 in the World Cup. Can he open for RCB as well in IPL 2024? Cameron Green can open the batting, right? What if Virat Kohli decides to do the job that he would do for the national team in the World Cup – bat at No. 3? Is there a possibility?” Aakash Chopra asked during the Dharamsala Test, while speaking to Sports 18.
For RCB, Virat Kohli has been opening the batting recently. In the IPL 2023, the former captain was at the top of his game, amassing 639 runs, including two hundreds. As the IPL opener, Kohli averages over 43 and has a strike rate of over 135. He has amassed 3611 runs in 98 matches as an opener.
If Virat Kohli indeed plays at number 3, who is likely to open of RCB? Former cricketer Saba Karim feels Cameron Green will be a good option.

“RCB have to think about their strategy. If you look at Faf du Plessis’s numbers in SA20 this year, it’s not that great. It can become an issue there. So, keeping all these in mind, I think RCB need their domestic players to step up. They can’t just trust their KGF to do it. So if Virat Kohli bats at No. 3, Cameron Green can go to open the batting. There are chances of promoting domestic talents also up the order. RCB have to work on these things,” Saba Karim said.
