Former Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli, who has been grappling with health challenges, has received much-needed support from the legendary Sunil Gavaskar during his difficult times. Kambli was hospitalized in December last year due to complications from a urinary infection and severe cramps. He remained under medical care in Thane for nearly two weeks before being discharged on January 1.
His health struggles have been ongoing, having previously undergone two heart surgeries in 2013 with financial assistance from his longtime friend and cricketing icon, Sachin Tendulkar.
Kambli made headlines when he attended the inauguration of a memorial dedicated to his former coach, Ramakant Achrekar, at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park in December, where Sachin was also present.
Vinod Kambli gets Sunil Gavaskar’s help
Observers noted that he did not appear to be in the best condition, and just weeks after the event, he was hospitalized again. Recognizing his distress, Gavaskar assured that Kambli would receive help, vowing that members of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning squad would come together to support their fellow cricketer—a promise he has now fulfilled.
As reported by The Times of India, Gavaskar has extended aid to Kambli through his CHAMPS Foundation, an initiative established in 1999 to assist former international athletes in need. In accordance with this commitment, Kambli will now receive a monthly financial allowance of INR 30,000 for the remainder of his life, starting April 1.
Additionally, an annual provision of INR 30,000 will be allocated for his medical expenses, ensuring continued support for his health and well-being.
