Ruturaj Gaikwad has taken the Vijay Hazare Trophy by storm as the Maharashtra captain has now slammed back to back hundreds in the competition. Just a day after his 136-run knock saw Maharashtra sink Madhya Pradesh, the Chennai Super Kings star handed the bowlers a chastening with his second century in two days. Gaikwad hit 14 fours and five sixes, while putting on an opening stand of 120 with Yash Nahar as Maharashtra chased down 276 against Chhattisgarh.

His form in the IPL had seen him being called up to the second string Indian side in Sri Lanka, but he failed to make a mark there. However, he bounced back from that setback to finish as the Orange Cap holder of IPL 2021, piping the likes of Faf du Plessis, Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul. Gaikwad is the youngest to ever win the Orange Cap, and continued his form into the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he hit three successive half-centuries. He finished as the leading run-getter of the tournament, with an average of above 50, with a strike rate nearing 150.

With the Indian selectors yet to name the squad for the limited-overs series against the Proteas, Ruturaj Gaikwad’s form comes in at a crucial time, which could see him getting called up the team. While India has a plethora of opening options in captain Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul, the addition of Gaikwad further boosts their armoury and especially with Dhawan and Rohit on the wrong side of their 30s. With Dhawan having little favour with the Indian team, an opportunity could really present itself to the newly appointed Maharashtra captain, who will be keen to make his mark in India colours.
