Varun Chakravarthy has put himself right at the front to secure a spot in India’s Champions Trophy 2025 squad with his performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Ahead of the announcement of the provisional squad for the marquee event, the spinner delivered yet another commendable performance, this time against Rajasthan in the pre-quarterfinal. Like Yasjasvi Jaiswal, Chakravarthy is one star who is yet to make his ODI debut.
Varun Chakravarthy > Kuldeep Yadav for CT 2025?
For the unversed, Kuldeep has just begun bowling in the nets after being injured recently. India captain Rohit Sharma had earlier revealed that the spinner was not a part of IND vs AUS Test series because he had fitness issues coupled with visa struggles. Varun’s performance in Vijay Hazare Trophy puts him ahead of Yadav for selection in Champions Trophy squad, given his form recently.
Here’s the data in a table with two columns: one for the score and one for the opposing team:
Spell in VHT | Vs |
---|---|
2/36 | UP |
2/39 | J&K |
1/49 | Vidarbha |
5/9 | Mizoram |
3/34 | Chhattisgarh |
5/52 | Rajasthan (today) |
Varun last featured for India in a T20I against South Africa in November 2024. In the second T20I at St George’s Park, Varun took five wickets, setting up what seemed to be a comfortable win for India. He dismissed important South African players, including Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram, Marco Jansen, and David Miller. Varun also claimed the crucial wicket of wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen. Despite his efforts, South Africa’s Tristan Stubbs and Gerald Coetzee managed to resist and deny India the victory.
With 83 wickets to his name in IPL, the Tamil Nadu spinner is now looking to break into the ODI team. He might stand a chance of making it to the squad for CT 2025, given that Kuldeep is still recovering from his injury.
