Veteran spinner Amit Mishra questioned Shubman Gill’s leadership qualities. On Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast, Amit questioned Gill’s captaincy skills, citing Gujarat Titan’s IPL 2024 performance under his leadership.
On being asked, whether he will choose Shubman Gill as the future captain for team India, he said, “Mai Shubman ko captain nahi banaunga, kyonki maine ussay IPL me dekha, he doesn’t know ki captaincy kaise karna hai, uske paas captaincy ka idea hi nahi hai.”
(I will not make Shubman the captain because I have seen him in the IPL; he does not know how to do captaincy, he has no idea of captaincy.)
Gill’s lousy performance as a captain at IPL 2024
After Hardik Pandya returned to his old franchise, the Mumbai Indians, Shubhman Gill was named as the captain for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2024. It was the team’s third season in the league.
Gill’s first year as captain of the Gujarat Titans wasn’t great. The team managed to win 5 out of 14 games and didn’t even reach the playoffs for the first time. They finished the season at number 8 in the points table.
International success for Gill
However, this criticism comes against the backdrop of Gill’s recent success, leading India to a series win against Zimbabwe.
Time will tell if Gill can learn from his IPL experience and change his international success into consistent leadership at the franchise level as well.
