PAK vs USA: Huge upset in Texas, USA beat Pakistan in Super over to script history

Fatigued Pakistan suffer shock defeat as hosts USA beat last edition's runners-up in Super Over to create history.

PAK vs USA, Match 11: USA have created history and a huge upset in the T20 World Cup as they beat Pakistan in Super Over by 5 runs. The USA almost chased down Pakistan’s total of 159 in the limited 20 overs. But some great death bowling forced the match into a Super Over. However, with Mohd Amir faltering with three wides, the USA scored 18 and Pakistan could only manage 13/1. This is USA’s second victory over a Test-playing nation after they beat Bangladesh in the T20 series.

In a not so great batting outing, Pakistan recovered from opening blues with just 30 runs coming in the powerplay. But from there, Shadab Khan (40 off 25) took charge with Babar Azam providing him with able support with a sluggish 43-ball 44-run knock. In the end, Shaheen Afridi hit 23 off 16 as Pakistan posted 159/7. Nosthush Kenjige was excellent for the USA with 3/30 apart from Saurabh Netravalkar (2/18).

USA vs Pakistan Score

Welcome to the live coverage of the 11th match of the T20 World Cup between the USA and Pakistan.

Pakistan’s probable XI

Babar Azam (c), Mohammad Rizwan, Usman Khan, Fakhar Zaman, Iftikhar Ahmed, Shadab Khan, Azam Khan (wk), Haris Rauf, Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Abrar Ahmed.

USA’s probable XI

Steven Taylor, Monank Patel (c & wk) Andries Gous, Aaron Jones, Corey Anderson, Harmeet Singh, Nitish Kumar, Shadley van Schalkwyk, Jasdeep Singh, Ali Khan, Saurabh Netravalkar.

How will Pakistan manage without Imad Wasim?

With their best all-rounder out, Babar Azam has a tough chance to find his replacement. In all likelihood, they’ll bring in Abrar Ahmed as the second spinner, while Azam Khan will play as a pure batter. This would mean that Iftikhar Ahmed and Shadab Khan would have to bowl four overs combined.

Touchdown!

One change for USA, Pakistan going in with four bowlers

Monank Patel thinks it’ll be easy to chase here, while Babar Azam reckons the pitch is ‘Test match’ like.

Playing XIs

Pakistan: Babar Azam (c), Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Usman Khan, Fakhar Zaman. Azam Khan, Iftikhar Ahmed, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Mohammad Amir, Haris Rauf.

USA: Steven Taylor, Monank Patel (c & wk), Andries Gous, Aaron Jones. Nitish Kumar, Corey Anderson, Harmeet Singh, Jasdeep Singh, Nosthush Kenjige, Saurabh Netravalkar, Ali Khan.

Will Azam Khan keep?

Mohammad Rizwan has been slated as the wicketkeeper for Pakistan; does that mean Babar Azam doesn’t trust Azam Khan’s ability behind the stumps?

Rizwan starts well

Pakistan: 9/0 after 1 over.

Catch of the tournament!

What an incredible catch from Steven Taylor. A one handed stunner in the slips sends Mohammad Rizwan back as USA draws first blood.

Pakistan: 9/1 after 1.2 overs.

Usman departs

Wow! Pakistan is two down in no time. After Rizwan, Usman Khan is the next victim. He falls to Nosthush Kenjige, trying to go a slog, but finds the fielder at long-off.

Pakistan: 14/2 after 2.3 overs.

Slow start for PAK

It’s not going Pakistan’s way at the moment. They have scored just 22 runs in the first four overs and lost two wickets as well. The ball is moving around, and pacers are in control.

Pakistan: 22/2 after 4 overs.

USA all over Pakistan

Fakhar Azam is the third victim. He tries to lapse the ball over short third and is caught in the process.

Pakistan: 27/3 after 5 overs.

End of powerplay

Pakistan end powerplay with just 30 runs losing three wickets. Not a good start for Pakistan but Babar Azam is on the crease and he could play a long innings. But Pakistan have to cut down on the dot ball percentage. Pakistan have already conceded 22 dot balls out of 36 deliveries.

Pakistan: 30/3 after 6 overs.

Pakistan batters struggle

No wickets since Fakhar Zaman but Pakistani batters are struggling on this pitch. Pakistan have hit two sixes but not a single boundary yet and that’s concerning.

Pakistan: 40/3 after 8 overs.

A six at last

6 overs later, Pakistan have finally got a six with Shadab Khan clearing the fence against Jasdeep Singh. He clears the fence again for another six. However, Pakistan need many more of those. Babar is struggling with 14 off 25 while Shadab Khan taking thee charge. Babar got his first boundary after 24 deliveries and that was also Pakistan’s first four.

Pakistan: 66/3 after 10 overs.

Babar Azam breaks shackles

Babar Azam is finally breaking shackles after struggling in his first 24 deliveries. In the last five deliveries, he has hit two boundaries and a six to be on the move. 20 runs came from the 12th over.

Pakistan: 93/3 after 12 overs.

Shadab Khan departs

USA have found the breakthrough from Kenjige. Shadab was looking to score quick runs and against Kenjige, he tried to loft it over the fine leg. But he mistimed and Netravalkar took a good catch to end a fine knock.

Pakistan: 98/4 after 12.4 overs.

Azam fails again

Azam Khan falls for a golden duck and also wastes a review in the process. He was plumbed but still took the review with a nod from Babar Azam. However, as was expected, it was a clean LBW. Pakistan lose 5 wickets for 98.

Pakistan: 98/5 after 13 overs.

Azam under pressure

This was Azam Khan’s 4th duck in 14 matches and also a consecutive one as he was dismissed for a duck against England in his last game.

Babar Azam departs

Pakistan lose a big wicket as Babar Azam departs for 44. He also wastes a review as the replay shows the ball was hitting the top of the middle stump.

Pakistan 125/6 in 15.5

Pakistan lose Iftikhar

The chance of Pakistan reaching 170-180 is vanishing quickly. The big-hitter Iftikhar Ahmed departs for 18 off 14 as Saurabh Netravalkar bags his second wicket in a terrific spell.

Pakistan 140/7 in 18.1

Pakistan 159/7

Shaheen Afridi has played an excellent knock of 16-ball 23 and that helps Pakistan post 159/7.
