Unpopular Opinion: Punjab Kings really don’t have a single player worth Rs 18 crore retention ahead of IPL Auction

With the IPL 2025 auction looming, Punjab Kings might be better off entering the auction with a larger purse.

As the IPL 2025 mega-auction approaches, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) face tough decisions regarding which players to retain. Under the updated rules, franchises can retain up to six players, with the first retention capped at Rs 18 crore. However, PBKS finds itself in a unique position — there may not be a single player in their squad who justifies this price tag.

Who can Punjab Kings retain?

With the departure of former captain Shikhar Dhawan and the appointment of Ricky Ponting as head coach, Punjab Kings are in the midst of a significant rebuild. The team has a handful of standout players, but none that might be considered essential enough for the Rs 18 crore slot.

Among the players in the discussion for retention are Sam Curran, Arshdeep Singh, Kagiso Rabada, and Liam Livingstone, but whether any of these stars deserve to be held onto at such a high price is debatable.

Sam Curran: Big Investment, but worth Rs 18 Crore?

Sam Curran, the all-rounder and last season’s stand-in captain, was the most expensive buy in 2021. While he showed flashes of brilliance, Curran’s performances did not consistently justify the hefty price tag.

Though a useful middle-order batsman and handy bowler, Curran hasn’t delivered the sort of impact that would make him indispensable at Rs 18 crore. With Ricky Ponting now at the helm, the franchise might look to part ways with some of their big-money English signings, including Curran.

Arshdeep Singh: Retention option via RTM

Arshdeep Singh, who has been a crucial figure in India’s T20 setup and a star during the 2024 T20 World Cup, is one of the few domestic players in PBKS’ ranks who could warrant retention.

However, even for a player of his calibre, Rs 18 crore might be a stretch. Punjab may opt to let Arshdeep go into the auction and then use the Right to Match (RTM) card to bring him back at a more reasonable price.

Kagiso Rabada and Liam Livingstone: Too Inconsistent?

Kagiso Rabada, a proven fast bowler, and Liam Livingstone, known for his explosive batting, are both key players for Punjab Kings. But both have struggled with consistency. Rabada, while still a dangerous new-ball bowler, had an inconsistent last season, and all-rounder Liam Livingstone has been unable to maintain his form over multiple games.

Though they remain valuable assets, neither has done enough to justify being retained for Rs 18 crore.

Time for strategic reset for Punjab Kings ahead of IPL 2025 Auction?

With the IPL 2025 auction looming, Punjab Kings might be better off entering the auction with a larger purse. The squad’s reliance on overseas stars like Curran and Livingstone has yet to translate into sustained success. A fresh approach under Ponting’s guidance, coupled with smart auction strategy, could see the team focus on building a more balanced and well-rounded squad.

In conclusion, while PBKS has some exciting talent, no player in their current roster appears to warrant the hefty Rs 18 crore retention. The upcoming auction presents an opportunity for the franchise to reassess and potentially reshape their squad for a brighter future.
