During the Perth Test, he dropped a relatively straightforward chance off Usman Khawaja, prompting scathing comments from Mark Waugh again, who called it a “regulation” catch, even suitable for park cricket or under-10s.
The recent drop by Abdullah Shafique proved costly for Pakistan, as Warner went on to survive and continue his innings. Despite Pakistan having the upper hand in the first session, they failed to capitalize on opportunities, with no wickets to show for their efforts. Pakistan skipper Shan Mahood’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss seemed justified, given the favorable conditions that saw the ball swinging and nipping away from the Australian batsmen.
Reflecting on the missed chance, Kerry O’Keeffe from Fox Cricket noted during the drinks break that the first opportunity had to be taken, and the dropped catch felt like déjà vu, reminiscent of earlier missed opportunities in the series. The spilled catch added to Pakistan’s woes as they sought crucial breakthroughs in the Boxing Day Test.
