The IND vs AUS 4th Test at Melbourne has seen some dramatic contest with many twists and turns. While Jasprit Bumrah’s four wickets in the second innings has put India in a strong position, another Indian bowler, Akash Deep has seen some real bad luck despite bowling well. He has created plenty of opportunities, but he has been unable to convert them into wickets, often falling short by a whisker.
Multiple plays and misses
Akash Deep’s spell had a lot of plays and misses. This has frustrated the bowler and the fielding side. He has bowled 12 overs so far and his deliveries regularly go past the edge of the bat only to miss the stumps by a fraction. Australia’s dependable batter Marnus Labuschagne has survived the close calls, with Deep’s deliveries often seaming away just enough to beat the bat but not enough to hit the stumps. These moments showed how finely tuned Akash Deep’s bowling was, but luck wasn’t on his side.
Stumps miss against Smith and Labuschagne
Akash Deep was also unlucky not just against Marnus Labuschagne but Steve Smith as well. Akash Deep consistently beat their defences with deliveries landing in the corridor of fate. In the 45th over one such delivery came when Labuschagne spun back sharply, missing the stumps by inches, leaving Virat Kohli in disbelief and holding his head in frustration. Against Smith, Akash Deep managed to find edges in his 29th over that somehow escaped the fielders or fell just short.
Jaiswal’s drop at gully
Adding to Akash Deep’s woes was a dropped catch by Yashasvi Jaiswal at gully off Labuschagne in the 39th over. The catch seemed straightforward, coming at a comfortable height, yet Jaiswal could not hold on. Despite batting it hard, it seems like Akash Deep need a but of luck as well.
