All media eyes were panned on Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer as Team India scheduled an optional training session at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai ahead of IND vs SL. The match, which will be played on Thursday, November 2, will be a big litmus test for Iyer who has been team’s weakest link in successful campaign.
Only 7 players turned up for Team India’s optional training session. KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Surykumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Ravichandran Ashwin, Shardul Thakur and Ravindra Jadeja were the players who trained at nets.
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma along with Virat Kohli and pacers skipped the training session on Tuesday and opted to stay back in the hotel in hot and humid Mumbai weather.
Shreyas Iyer’s spot in jeopardy
Shreyas Iyer, who has had a disappointing outing in the World Cup so far, batted in nets for 2-long hours and worked on his footwork.
With scores of 0, 25, 53, 19, 33 and 4, Iyer has 134 runs at 33.5 while batting at No. 4. With Hardik Pandya set to return in semi-final game, Team India might opt for Suryakumar Yadav in place of Shreyas Iyer in the important match.
Suryakumar Yadav showed a lot of composure and technique during his brilliant 49-run knock in IND vs ENG.
Iyer’s long struggle with the short deliveries has been one of the reason behind his poor run in the tournament. In the previous game, the batter was out while attempting a pull shot. The 28-year-old will have to come up with a good performance in IND vs SL, otherwise, his place in India’s Playing XI would be in jeopardy.
Apart from Shreyas, Ravichandran Ashwin also trained hard in nets. The veteran spinner has only played one match in this tournament so far and is likely to sit out for IND vs SL as well.
