Amidst the excitement of IPL 2024, ticket prices have surged, particularly for teams like Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Last-minute premium seats for RCB games can cost as much as ₹52,938, from the original ₹42,350.
In Bengaluru, where Royal Challengers Bengaluru boasts a fervent fanbase, the cheapest ticket starts at ₹2,300, the tournament’s highest base price. Prices for more expensive seats rise as game day approaches, but the most affordable tickets are protected from surge pricing.
However, RCB’s performances have not justified the costs at all. Bengaluru has lost six of its seven matches thus far. Chinnaswamy has hosted four IPL matches so far, and Faf du Plessis’ squad has lost three of them, disappointing RCB supporters. Virat Kohli and Dinesh Karthik have been RCB’s standout players this season.

Who decides the ticket prices?
Franchises wield autonomy over ticket pricing, utilizing strategies akin to surge pricing in airlines. This practice, endorsed by Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) secretary Rajan Manchanda, operates without regulation from the Indian board, which prioritizes infrastructure over pricing decisions.
The upward trend in ticket prices is also attributed to substantial taxes, including a 28% GST and 25% entertainment tax, as noted by Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan. Consequently, despite nominal prices, actual franchise earnings remain relatively modest.
