Trouble in Punjab Kings before IPL 2025? Preity Zinta drags co-owner to court

Preity Zinta is one of the four co-owners of the Punjab Kings, formerly known as Kings XI Punjab.

You’d think the biggest drama in the IPL would be on the field, right? Wrong! It looks like the Punjab Kings (PBKS) dugout is turning into a real-life chaos. And the in the thick of action is well-known co-owner Preity Zinta. Apparently, things have gotten so heated between Preity and her co-owner, Mohit Burman, who owns the largest shares of PBKS, that the Bollywood star is actually is dragging him to court.

What is brewing at PBKS?

Zinta, who holds a 23% stake in the team through KPH Dream Cricket Private Limited, alleges that Burman, the majority shareholder with a 48% stake, intends to sell 11.5% of his shares without adhering to internal agreements among the owners. These agreements stipulate that any shares offered for sale must first be offered to existing promoters.

Burman had told Cricbuzz that “he don’t have any plans to sell his shares“. However, huge reports emerged that Burman is looking to sell 11.5% of his shares, that too, an ‘unnamed party’.

The specific reasons for Zinta’s legal action remain undisclosed, but the matter is set for a hearing on August 20. The dispute has certainly raised concerns about the future of the franchise, which has struggled to achieve consistent success in the IPL.

Alongside Delhi Capitals (DC) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), PBKS remain highly unsuccessful franchise to never lift the IPL title despite competing since the inaugural 2008 season. The team has reached the final and semifinals just once each in their 17-year history. While the team’s on-field performance has been a cause for concern, the off-field legal battle is likely to create further distractions for the franchise.
