WTC Final 2023: Indian team head coach Rahul Dravid has said that his side is not under pressure to win an ICC Trophy. Ahead of the second World Test Championship (WTC) Final against Australia, Dravid addressed the media and said while winning will be good, he is proud of the way the Indian team has played in this cycle.
“We don’t feel any pressure in terms of trying to win an ICC trophy. Of course, it would be nice to do it. Nice to be able to win an ICC tournament,” Dravid said.
“But also, in the context of things, you look at this and you see this is the culmination of 2 years of work, the culmination of a lot of success that gets you here. There are a lot of positives to take from that, see where you stand in the table, winning series in Australia, drawing series here. Being very competitive, this team has played in the world over in the last 5-6 years. Those are things that will never change, just because, you don’t have an ICC trophy. That’s really the bigger picture,” he added.
“But, of course, it would be nice to be able to lift… any game of cricket, you want to win it. This happens to be the WTC final and it would be nice to get on the right side of the result,” he added.
Notably, India has not won an ICC) trophy since MS Dhoni’s side lifted the Champions Trophy in 2013. They have played four semi-finals and two finals since then but are yet to win another ICC silverware.
Their recent hearbreak came in T20 World Cup 2022, when Men in Blue, under Rohit Sharma, lost the semi-final against England.
India’s Test legend Rahul Dravid, who took over as Team India’s head coach from Ravi Shastri after the T20 World Cup in the UAE in 2021, has not been managed to crack the code of ICC tournaments.
Under Dravid’s coaching, Team India failed to win the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup in 2022. The 50-year-old’s contract is set to expire after the ODI World Cup 2023 in India, and another failure in ICC tournament would mark his coaching tenure as unsuccessful.
