TATA WPL 2025

Players to watch out for

The third edition of the Women’s Premier League is almost here. Like the previous two editions, TATA WPL 2025 will also be a five-team affair. It could be the last edition with five teams as the BCCI is looking to expand the league to one or two more teams in the next cycle. WPL 2025 will take place in the February-March window. From 2026, it will move to a new window of January-February as granted by the ICC.

However, before the third edition, TATA WPL 2025 Auction will take place on December 15 in Bengaluru. With franchises retaining 71 players as part of WPL 2025 Retention, they have just 19 slots available to fill. Hence, WPL Cricket auction will be a short auction on Dec 15.

WPL 2024 Winner

But before the WPL 2025 begins, let’s take a look at the defending champions. Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women ended the trophy drought for the franchise, winning the WPL title, and beating Delhi Capitals Women in the final.

However, it was not a flawless campaign by RCB. Smriti Mandhana-led RCB scrapped past UP Warriorz after RCB beat Mumbai Indians in their last league match. RCB again got the better of Mumbai Indians when they beat their rivals in the Eliminator by just five runs.

Australian all-rounder Ellyse Perry was RCB’s most valuable player as she scored 347 runs in nine matches and bagged seven wickets. Young Shreyanka Patil too came to the fore with the ball, bagging 13 wickets, the tournament’s highest.

Delhi Capitals Women

Delhi Capitals have come close to the trophy twice in a row but they are still trophyless despite two almost flawless seasons. Led by the enigmatic Meg Lanning, Delhi Capitals Women have been one of the most consistent teams in WPL.

They lost the WPL Final to Mumbai Indians in the first season and then to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in WPL 2024. With Lanning leading the side again, DC will look to bounce back.

Led by Beth Mooney, Gujarat Giants Women have a solid squad. However, despite the presence of Mooney, Harleen Deol and Ashleigh Gardner, Gujarat Giants have failed to perform well in the last two seasons. They have finished outside the playoff bracket on both occasions.

Led by India captain Harmanpreet Kaur, Mumbai Indians Women have already clinched the WPL title in their debut season. They also qualified for the playoffs last season. With big names such as Yastika Bhatia and Hayley Matthews in the team, Mumbai Indians are already a formidable unit.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women

Smriti Mandhana-led Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women are also star-studded like RCB Men. With Ellyse Perry, Sophie Devine and Richa Ghosh firing from all cylinders, RCB lifted the WPL title in 2024 despite a lukewarm league stage. RCB Women did what the men could not do. Now, they will have a big challenge in WPL 2025.

UP Warriorz

One of the most promising teams in Women Premier League that has failed to deliver so far is UP Warriorz. Despite qualifying for the playoffs, UP Warriorz failed to make it to the final in the first season. In the second season, UPW finished the league stage outside the playoff bracket, winning just three matches. Australia captain Alyssa Healy is the captain of the team.
