South African batter Tony de Zorzi seems to have a thing or two for Indian bowlers. Playing his sixth ODI match on Thursday, de Zorzi led the South African chase with with a fantastic innings of 81 runs of 87 balls in the IND vs SA 2nd ODI. The southpaw had also been instrumental in the IND vs SA 2nd ODI, scoring his maiden century to help the Proteas level the series.
The ease with which the left-handed batter, who had only played three ODI matches before the series, tackled the Indian bowling line-up in the series, a question arises about whether the Indians have found their new nemesis. The Indian bowling line-up has looked clueless in front of de Zorzi till now. The Proteas batter has a strong base with particular mastery playing square of the wicket. De Zorzi’s movement is fluid too, meaning he is as capable of rotating the strike as hitting big shots.
After his maiden century in the IND vs SA 2nd ODI, de Zorzi looked even more confident on Thursday. India had given a target of 298 in the do-or-die fixture. Opening the innings along with Reeza Hendricks, Tony de Zorzi meant business as he played some good shots through the covers and mid-off region, with the Indian bowling line-up finding no way to unsettle the in-form batter.
After moving to 81 with six fours and three sixes, Arshdeep Singh finally managed to trap the Southpaw in front of the stumps. However, it was not before de Zorzi had a meaningful impact on the game. If the Proteas indeed manages to win the match and the series, de Zorzi will definitely be in the running for the Man of the Series award.
