Time’s up for England cricketers, stars abandon IPL 2024 for T20 World Cup

Eight players from England's 15-man T20 World Cup squad were participating in the IPL 2024.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has recalled half of their players from the IPL 2024. As defending champions, there are high hopes for the England cricket team as the T20 World Cup 2024 gets closer and closer. Having already prepared for the mega-event for about 50 days in India, English stars have traveled back home.

England players’ availability in IPL 2024

Jos Buttler, Will Jacks, Reece Topley, Liam Livingstone, Phil Salt, Sam Curran, and Jonny Bairstow have either all left India or will leave before the IPL 2024 Playoffs end. That too, with at least one league-stage game to go for their respective sides.

It seems like only Moeen Ali will return to England once the league stage ends. The spin-bowling all-rounder is expected to leave after May 18, when the Chennai Super Kings play their final game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Pakistan reason behind English players leaving IPL?

Weirdly enough, the Pakistan cricket team is the reason why English cricketers are leaving IPL 2024 before the playoffs. On May 22, the Jos Buttler-led side will kick off a 4-match T20I series against Babar Azam’s men. The two nations had decided to prepare for the mega-event by playing against each other.

England will play the 4th T20I on May 30 and then leave for America. Then, after just a four-day rest, they’ll play their first match of the T20 World Cup 2024 on June 4.
