Timed out! Fans shell shocked as ICC suspends Sri Lanka cricket board

ICC said that Sri Lanka cricket had breached its obligations as a member, in particular the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously.

Fans on social media were shocked as the International Cricket Council (ICC) suspended Sri Lanka Cricket’s membership due to a breach of obligations on Friday, November 10. It must be noted that Sri Lanka had a very poor outing in the ongoing World Cup as they managed to win just two out of their nine matches so far. Thanks to that, Sri Lanka also failed to qualify directly for the upcoming Champions Trophy in 2025.

Sri Lanka will host ICC U19 World Cup next year

In a statement released on Friday night, the ICC said that the SLC had breached its obligations as a member, in particular the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and without government interference.

“The conditions of the suspension will be decided by the ICC Board in due course,” said ICC in a statement. The ICC Board is set to meet on November 21, after which the future course of action is expected to be clearer. Sri Lanka is scheduled to host the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup across January and February 2024.

Sri Lanka recently lost their last World Cup group stage match against New Zealand before bowing out of the competition. As stated above, Sri Lanka managed to win just two matches in the World Cup as their campaign was plagued with injuries. It must be noted that If the ban stays in place, then Sri Lanka won’t be playing in the upcoming T20 World Cup next year in Carribean.
