Thomas Cup Badminton India: HS Prannoy, who was battling an injury, produced a lion-hearted effort despite battling an ankle injury as he defeated India’s Kidambi Srikanth continued his unbeaten run in the Thomas Cup as he defeated Rasmus Gemke 13-21, 21-9, 21-12 to take India into the final. Apart from Prannoy, Kidambi Srikanth too extended his unbeaten run in the tournament as he defeated Anders Antonsen 21-18, 12-21, 21-15 in the second men’s singles tie.
Earlier, Satwiksairaj Reddy and Chirag Shetty won crucial doubles tie against the Danish pair of Astrup & Christiansen in 3 sets. These three victories helped India progress to the dream final. Lakshya Sen lost 13-21, 13-21 to World No. 1 Viktor Axelsen of Denmark and Men’s doubles pair of India defeated 5 times champions Malayasia in the quarterfinal.

The contest started off well with both the players challenging each other early on in the first set. Lakshya Sen gave a tough fight initially as he took a 8-6 lead early on in the set. The World No.1 however managed to crawl his way back with some brillaint strokes and plaements as he entered the break with a 11-9 lead. From then on, Axelsen looked a completely different man as he started dominating the set. He gave away only four points to his oppposition as he won the first set 21-13.
In the second set too, the World No.1 showcased his strength as he was unbreakable and had answers to every challenge posed by Lakshya Sen. He raced to a 11-4 lead by the break and continued the one-man show for the remainder of the set as he won the set 21-13 to help Denmark lead the tie.

Both the players started off well in the very first set. It was a closely fought encoounter with Srikanth maintaining a slender lead. Just before the first-set break, Antensen closed the gap and took a narrow 11-9 lead. Srikanth however fought his way back to take the lead and then managed to win the first set 21-18.
Kidambi Srikanth committed way too many errors in the second that proved to be detrimental as he was on the backseat for the majority of the second set. Andersen utilised the opportunity to win the second set 21-12 and extended the contest into the decider.
In the third set, Srikanth was at his best as he challenged his opponent right from the start and got his act together. Srikanth was brilliant with his smashes and Antonsen lost steam as the Indian took seven consecutive points from 5-4 to enter the break 11-4, with a massive seven-point lead. Antonsen managed to fight back but in the end it was too little too late as Srikanth won the set 21-15.

Up against World No.13 Rasmus Gemke, HS Prannoy struggled in the first set as he suffered an ankle injury after twisting it while going for a shot. He continued with the match after taking a mediacal timeout, but his movement was largely restricted. He was never in the contest in the first set as he lost it 13-21. He however, made a terrific comeback in the next set as right from the start, he started showcasing his dominance.
Depite a restricted movement, he stole the show completely as the Danish player failed to match his intetnsity. He won the next two sets comfortably as the scores read 21-9, 21-12 that helped India create history.

Chirag / Rankireddy vs Astrup / Christiansen
Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Rankireddy and Shetty dished out a gritty performance holding their nerves in the final stages to beat Astrup and Christiansen 21-18 21-23 22-20. The Indians started off slowly and were behind the Danish duo. However, they displayed a good fight to push themselves in the front and take the lead. They managed to win the first set and even led the second set in the dying moments, but the Danish duo were in the contest right until the end and managed to take the game into the third set. In the third set too both the teams showed terrific fight. It went down the wire and finally the Indians managed to pull of a terrific victory to give first victory for India in the tie.
Garaga /Panjala vs Rasmussen / Sogaard
India’s Krishnaprasad Garaga and Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjala were no match for Denmark’s Anders Rasmussen as they lost the contest 14-21 13-21 as the tie was tentatively posed at 2-2.
