Third time is the charm! Will Rahul Dravid throw his hat in ring to become India head coach once again?

Rahul Dravid became India cricket team's head coach in November 2021 for a tenure of a period of 2 years which was later extended

The BCCI has invited fresh applications for the position of India cricket team’s head coach, launching the hunt for Rahul Dravid’s replacement. One question that pops up in everyone’s minds is that will ‘The Wall’ reapply for the position. Dravid’s role as the head coach will come to an end with the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2024.

Will Rahul Dravid throw his hat into the ring to become coach again?

Rahul Dravid signed up as the head coach for the Men in Blue in November 2021. His contract was slated to last for two years, until the end of the ODI World Cup in 2023. Following India’s heartbreaking exit from the finals of the tournament, Dravid and the support staff’s tenure was extended till the end of the T20 World Cup as India eye redemption.

With the BCCI ruling out the option of split coaching, Dravid can safely reapply for the position if he chooses to. However, reports have stated that the Karnataka star is unlikely to do so and will pave way for a new person to take over the reins after the T20 WC. The deadline to submit the applications for the new coach has been set at 6 PM IST on May 27, 2024.

How has Dravid fared as India’s coach?

Jammy started his tenure in an emphatic fashion as the Men in Blue thrashed New Zealand 3-0 in a three-match T20I series. Overall, Dravid has won more than 16 bilateral series defeating several heavyweights including England, South Africa and Australia.

However, he has failed to deliver in the ICC tournaments. India has lost in 2022 T20 WC, World Test Championship 2023 and 2023 World Cup. Dravid has, perhaps, one last chance if India can manage to lift the T20 World Cup 2024.
