They don’t care: Steve Waugh blasts South Africa for sending novice squad to NZ

Steve Waugh furious with SA Cricket over dismal Test squad selection for NZ vs SA Test series

Australian great Steve Waugh has rebuked South Africa’s surprising squad selection. The Proteas who are set to play 2 Test matches against New Zealand in February has named a novice squad. Out of the 14-man squad, 7 of the players are uncapped which includes their captain, Neil Brand who himself is an uncapped player.

Former Australian captain and legend Steve Waugh is furious with the decision, He has gone on to say that the South Africa cricket board doesn’t care about Test cricket. Furthermore, he added that if he was New Zealand, he wouldn’t even have played the series.

Obviously they don’t care. It’s going to happen if the South African Cricket Board are any indication of the future, keeping their best players at home. If I was New Zealand I wouldn’t even play the series. I don’t know why they’re even playing. Why would you when it shows a lack of respect for New Zealand cricket,” Steve Waugh told The Sydney Morning Herald.

Showing his anger to nations showing less and less importance to Test cricket, Waugh added, “It’s pretty obvious what the problem is. The West Indies aren’t sending their full-strength side [to Austalia this summer]. They haven’t picked a full-strength Test team for a couple of years now.”

As for South Africa, the Proteas have beaten India in the Boxing Day Test. But the main reason for the hosts of not sending first team players to New Zealand is mainly due to SA20. The T20 tournament is slated to start from 10th Jan. And with T20 World Cup just months away, the Proteas have decided to turn their full attention to the shortest format of the game.

South Africa Test squad: Neil Brand (captain), David Bedingham, Ruan de Swardt, Clyde Fortuin, Zubayr Hamza, Tshepo Moreki, Mihlali Mpongwana, Duanne Olivier, Dane Paterson, Keegan Petersen, Dane Piedt, Raynard van Tonder, Shaun von Berg, and Khaya Zondo.
