Joe Root vs Pat Cummins: It’s the battle of captains! England’s skipper will be up against the world’s number 1 bowler Pat Cummins who will lead the Aussies. However, Joe Root is in red hot form in 2021. At the start of 2020, Root was ranked 9th in Test rankings, and ahead of the Ashes, he is sitting at the summit position.

While 2020 was a forgetful year for the English skipper he has been in tremendous form in the ongoing calendar year and already slammed 6 centuries. With England’s fragile top & middle order Root is the main key in the English batting lineup.

  • Pat Cummins has dismissed Joe Root 7 times in 19 innings
  • Joe Root hasn’t scored a hundred in Australia yet
  • Nathan Lyon & Josh Hazelwood have also dismissed Root seven times in 41 and 24 innings respectively

Meanwhile, England has named a 12-man squad for the Gabba Test with the decision over medium-pacer Robinson or spinner Jack Leach likely to be made before the toss. Earlier, Australia named a confirmed XI with Alex Carey set to don the wicketkeeping gloves.

England’s 12-man squad: J Root (c), Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler, Haseeb Hameed, Jack Leach, Dawid Malan, Ollie Pope, Ollie Robinson, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood.

Australia’s confirmed XI: David Warner, Marcus Harris, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Cameron Green, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins (captain), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood.
