Tendulkar Ramakant Tribute: Sachin Tendulkar in a Social media post remembered his childhood coach on his death anniversary. India’s veteran cricketer was coached by Rama Kant Achrekar during his youth days at Mumbai Shivaji Park. Former selector of Mumbai cricket Achrekar coached Vinod Kambli, Ajit Agarkar, Chandrakant Pandit, Vinod Kambli, and Pravin Amre including Sachin Tendulkar during their adolescent days.
Sachin once famously said, Achrekar sir used to put one coin on the stumps and would challenge every bowler in the maidan to bowl out Sachin and at the end, India’s former skipper would take the coin most of the time.

Rama Kant Achrekar died at age of 86 on 2nd January 2019 in Mumbai, India’s batting maestro attended the cremation process, and his body was kept in Shivaji Park where he coached future superstars of Indian cricketers and then it was taken for the cremation process. Achrekar used to take India’s veteran into different Mumabi’s maidan in his scooter to improve his technique and batting. Coach Achrekar was awarded Dronacharya Award in 1990 and Padma Shri in 2010.
Rama Kant Achrekar was Sachin’s first coach and played an important role in improving the technique and temperament of one of the greatest batters of all time Sachin Tendulkar during his teen days. The right-handed batsman Sachin’s elder brother Ajit Tendulkar introduced Ramakant Achrekar to him at Shivaji Park, Dadar. In the first meeting, Sachin was not able to play his best game. Ajit told Achrekar that he was feeling self-conscious due to the coach observing him, and was not displaying his natural game.

Later, Achrekar was impressed with Tendulkar’s talent and advised him to shift his schooling to Sharadashram Vidyamandir (English) High School, a school at Dadar which had a dominant cricket team and had produced many notable cricketers. Prior to this, Tendulkar had attended the Indian Education Society’s New English School in Bandra. He was also coached under the guidance of Achrekar at Shivaji Park in the mornings and evenings. On 14 November 1987, the 14-year-old Tendulkar was selected to represent Bombay in the Ranji Trophy and then Archrekar-trained Tendulkar went on to become the famously called ‘God of cricket’ during his 24 years long spanning career in International cricket.
