Papua New Guinea Cricket Team will begin their ICC T20 World Cup 2024 from June 2 as a tournament opener agianst home nation West Indies.
Papua New Guinea’s journey in the T20 World Cup has been one of perseverance and determination. They did not participate in the inaugural T20 World Cup held in South Africa in 2007. Subsequently, their path to qualification has been challenging, with intermittent appearances in later editions.
In the 2009 tournament held in England, Papua New Guinea did not qualify. Similarly, they were unable to secure a spot in the 2010 edition in the West Indies, the 2012 tournament in Sri Lanka, and the 2014 event in Bangladesh.
However, Papua New Guinea’s efforts saw them qualify for the 2016 ICC T20 World Cup held in India. Despite their qualification, they faced tough competition and did not advance past the group stage.
Their journey continued in the 2021 tournament held in the United Arab Emirates and Oman. Papua New Guinea participated in the group stage but finished at the bottom of the table, placing 16th out of 16 teams, with three matches played, no wins, and three losses.
In the subsequent edition in Australia in 2022, Papua New Guinea did not qualify for participation.
