Mumbai Indians demonstrated a knack for bouncing back. In 2009, they drastically improved their performance, narrowly missing out on the playoffs. Their perseverance paid off in 2010 when they reached the final for the first time, setting a precedent for future successes.
The turning point came in 2013 when the team clinched their first IPL title, defeating the Chennai Super Kings in a thrilling final. This victory marked the start of the Mumbai Indians’ dominance in the IPL. They went on to lift the trophy in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020, making them the most successful team in IPL history.

MI in IPL 2008
Mumbai Indians had a mixed outing in the inaugural season, finishing fifth and missing out on a playof spot by just a point. They won seven and lost as many matches to score 14 points. While Sachin Tendulkar was the original captain, Harbhajan Singh led initially due to the former’s injury.
MI in IPL 2009:
Despite a strong squad, MI had a poor outing in 2009 as they finished 7th in an 8-team tournament.
MI in IPL 2010:
Learning from the failure of the past two seasons, Mumbai Indians roared back in 2010. With the signing of Kieron Pollard, the team found balance. MI finished at the top of the league standings with 10 wins and only four losses. But they lost a thrilling final to Chennai Super Kings.
MI in IPL 2011:
MI won their first title with the Champions League T20, captained by Harbhajan Singh. In the IPL, the title remained elusive as they lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Qualifier 2. However, continuing their fine run in the league stage, MI finished third with nine wins and five losses in a 10-team IPL.
MI in IPL 2012:
With Sachin Tendulkar relinquishing captaincy, Harbhajan Singh became the full-time captain of the team in 2012. However, it did impact their on-field performances. A consistent Mumbai Indians finished the league stage with 20 points, winning 10 and losing six in a 16-match format. However, once again, they lost out to arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings in the Eliminator.
MI in IPL 2013:
It was a season of change and new beginnings. Even though Australian great Ricky Ponting was appointed the captain, he could only last six matches before he handed the reins to a young Rohit Sharma, who made the franchise one of the most successful ones. Rohit Sharma led MI to their first-ever IPL title as they beat their arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings in the final.
MI in IPL 2014:
With IPL 2013, Mumbai Indians now have had their core and consistency was the mantra. Even though MI were once again knocked out by their nemesis CSK in the Eliminator, they managed to finish within the Top 4.
MI in IPL 2015:
The next season in 2014, MI bounced back in style and finished second in the league stage. And MI had their sweet revenge over CSK in the final, winning by 41 runs to lift their second title.
MI in IPL 2016:
It was a season of failure and MI did fail as per the standard they set. MI finished fifth and missed out on a playoff spot. Injury to Corey Anderson and Aaron Finch did not help the matter while Josh Hazlewood had withdrawn, ruling three important players out.
MI in IPL 2017:
MI once again bounced back under a new coach Mahela Jayawardene. MI went on to finish at the top of the Points Table, winning 10 matches including a 6-match streak. Even though MI lost Qualifier 1, they once again bounced back to beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 6 wickets to seal a summit clash with Rising Pune Supergiants. And in a thrilling final, MI won by just 1 run in a low-scoring encounter to seal their third title.
MI in IPL 2018:
The high of 2017 was followed by the low of 2018. MI began with a hat-trick of losses and could never recover. MI finished fifth with six wins and eight losses to miss the playoffs.
MI in IPL 2019:
But as MI do, they roared back. With nine wins and 18 points, MI finished second just behind CSK on the NRR. But this time, they found CSK back on their path. However, MI trounced CSK in Qualifier 1 to seal the final spot. And guess what! CSK were back to meet them again. In a thriller of a final, Lasith Malinga defended nine runs off the last over to hand MI their fourth IPL title.
MI in IPL 2020:
Unlike past editions, MI found its mojo despite the IPL moving to the UAE due to the Covid-19 pandemic. With five consecutive wins, Mumbai had become a force to reckon with. Rohit Sharma & Co. finished the league stage at the top with nine wins and five losses. In the final, Rohit Sharma led from the front as MI trounced Delhi Capitals by 5 wickets to become the first team with five IPL titles.
MI in IPL 2021:
2020 was the end of a successful era for Mumbai Indians. The team needed an overhaul that they ignored. MI missed the playoff stage, finishing fifth with seven wins and as many losses.
MI in IPL 2022:
The signs MI ignored came back to haunt the team. Rohit Sharma lost his form while picking an injured Jofra Archer from the auction defied logic. And as they failed to seal the gaps, it ended up in catastrophe. Mumbai Indians hit rock-bottom, winning just four matches in the entire campaign It included an 8-match losing streak from the opening game.
MI in IPL 2023:
MI did bounce back to finish in the Top 4 but their prodigal son Hardik Pandya knocked his old team out in the playoffs. But the season was marked with injuries as both Jasprit Bumrah and Jofra Archer missed matches with injuries. And in the Qualifier 2, Mohit Sharma bagged a fifer for just 10 runs as Mumbai Indians crumbled from 155/4 to 171 all out.
