It was Gujarat Titans who successfully acquired Jos Buttler’s services at a hefty price, as one of the marquee players, he went to the IPL 2025 mega auction, where we all witnessed a bidding war for him, and it was the IPL 2022 champions who got him. However, looking back, many fans were shocked when he was released by his former franchise.
As for Rajasthan Royals, Buttler joined in 2018 and became a solid pillar of their batting lineup. His 2022 season was outstanding, scoring over 800 runs, earning the Orange Cap, and consistently delivering match-winning performances. Even in the last season, whenever RR found themselves in trouble, he stepped up and helped secure positive results, often single-handedly carrying the team across the finish line.
But now, the reality is that he is no longer with RR and is set to join GT. However, many of his fans believe there are other teams where he could have been a better fit than Gujarat Titans. Take a look at three teams where Jos Buttler could have been utilized better in IPL 2025.
Mumbai Indians
If we look at the current Mumbai Indians scenario, they have one opener fixed, which is Rohit Sharma. But what about the other opener? Will it be Will Jacks or Ryan Rickelton? That’s up for the Mumbai Indians management right now. However, if Jos Buttler had been in their lineup, all such questions would have been answered clearly. Buttler is an opener and, also, a wicketkeeper. Since MI released Ishan Kishan before the auction, many expected them to go MI all out for Buttler during the mega auction. But as mentioned, it was Gujarat Titans who ultimately secured him. Looking at MI’s overall needs, Buttler could have addressed all their concerns if he had been part of their team.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru
A team looking for their first IPL title released Faf du Plessis, a player who served them for three seasons and led the team to the playoffs twice. However, ahead of IPL 2025, the team decided to release him. RCB is now facing critical question, who will open with Virat Kohli? Possibly, Phil Salt looks like a strong contender as he can also keep wickets. However, Jos Buttler would surely have been an ideal fit here as well. Also, there is a vacancy for the captaincy role, though speculation says that Virat Kohli might take on the leadership this IPL 2025 season. If Buttler had been in the mix, the first two questions, an opening partner for Kohli and a reliable wicketkeeper, would have been resolved.
Lucknow Super Giants
Lucknow Super Giants would have been a good fit for Jos Buttler, especially with KL Rahul no longer in the team. Although they now have Rishabh Pant, when it comes to batting at the top, which Rahul used to do, Buttler could have fulfilled that role seamlessly. Also, since he is England’s white-ball captain, he could have taken up the responsibility of leading the team in the IPL as well. Always known for performing in big matches, Buttler would have been a valuable addition to the LSG lineup, combining his batting and wicketkeeping skills to strengthen the team.
