It is not very often that one comes across a team being awarded penalty runs by the umpires. But the second day of the third IND vs ENG Test in Rajkot, proved to be one of those rare occasions. The visitors were awarded five penalty runs by umpire Joel Wilson, after India batsman R Ashwin was found running in the centre of the pitch.
This wasn’t the first time something like that happened during this match, as on Thursday, even Ravindra Jadeja was found guilty of the same offence, twice, and was warned for the same. But then, finally, Team India was penalised five runs for it. This means, that the runs weren’t deducted from India’s total, but when England start their innings, they will start at 5/0.
Happened During IND vs NZ in 2016
During the Indore Test between the two teams, Jadeja again, was warned twice, before five runs were awarded to the Kiwis. After India declared their innings at 557/5, the opposition began their innings at 5/0. Eventually, India went on to win that Test by 321 runs, with Ashwin picking 13 wickets. The hosts claimed the series 3-0.
