Virat Kohli: Team India Injuries: Virender Sehwag – Cricketer-turned-expert Virender Sehwag made a scathing attack on present-day cricketers who are into weightlifting in the gym. Sehwag feels this is the primary reason cricketers are suffering injuries and setbacks. The former India opener believes not everyone is Virat Kohli and there should be different training programs designed for every cricketer based on their bodies. Recently, Shreyas Iyer and Jasprit Bumrah suffered back injuries and Sehwag opines it is purely because the players are obsessed with too much weightlifting. Sehwag slammed Team India’s performance coach Basu Shankar for designing the same training programs for all players. The former India opener gave the example of off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who was doing the same workout routine as Kohli.
“Basu Shanker was with the Indian team for a lot of years, and he made the same programs for all players. Why should there be the same program for Ravichandran Ashwin and Virat Kohli? When Ashwin was with the Kings XI Punjab, he told me he was doing clean-and-jerk workouts because it was in trend,” Sehwag said on TRS Clips.
“Athletes train from childhood for clean and jerk and still get injured. Imagine a cricketer starting when he’s over 30 years old. Both Ashwin and Axar had problems with their knees because of this workout,” he added.
Team India Injuries: Why Sehwag has launched a scathing attack on NCA regarding recurring injuries to players
· In the last six months, India have been hampered by injuries to key players like Jasprit Bumarh, Ravindra Jadeja, Shreyas Iyer, & Sanju Samson.
· Worst, the NCA are also rushing players to play international cricket, which in turn leads to recurring injuries to players.
· Bumrah is set to be ruled out for six months, and the status of Iyer is still not clear. Both players have back injuries.
· Sehwag feels players should focus on exercises that improve the game, rather than weightlifting.
· The former cricketer believes weightlifting will only give strength, but in return will increase soreness and stiffness.
Sehwag also compared the present cricketers to former players and felt the likes of Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Dravid, Dhoni, and Ganguly hardly suffered injuries related to back or hamstring.
“In our days, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, MS Dhoni, or Yuvraj Singh, nobody were ruled out due to back, hamstring, or quadricep injuries.”
