Team India dons special two-star ‘Champions’ jerseys for PM Modi meet-up and bus parade

Only the cricketers, coaches, and top BCCI officials attended the meeting with PM Modi, while family members waited back at the hotel.

India’s T20 World Cup-winning cricketers sported a special ‘champions’ jersey for their meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday. The jersey, in striking orange and blue, prominently featured ‘Champions’ written across the centre. This special edition was similar to the one worn during the World Cup in the USA and Caribbean islands, with the notable addition of ‘champions’ emblazoned on their chests.

The India fit also had one more star added to it, representing their latest T20 World Cup win in addition to 2007 T20 World Cup win.

India wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson, who was part of the 15-member squad but did not play in the tournament, shared a glimpse of this unique jersey on his social media handle. The team was seen leaving the ITC Maurya Hotel in these jerseys, heading to their meeting with PM Modi.

Limited attendance with PM Narendra Modi

Only the cricketers, coaches, and top BCCI officials attended the meeting with PM Modi, while family members waited back at the hotel.

The team, led by Rohit Sharma, landed in New Delhi early Thursday morning after being delayed in the Caribbean islands due to Hurricane Beryl. The hurricane had caused a two-day shutdown, preventing the team from leaving Barbados after their victory over South Africa in the final on June 29.

Arrival and Celebration in Delhi of Team India

As soon as the airport reopened, the BCCI arranged for a special charter flight to bring home the 70-strong Indian contingent, including players, coaches, families, board officials, and sports journalists. Despite the inclement weather, hundreds of supporters gathered outside Indira Gandhi International Airport to welcome the team. They waved national flags and held placards congratulating their favourite players.

Heavy security was deployed to manage the crowd, but the enthusiasm was undeterred. Fans cheered for star batter Virat Kohli, skipper Rohit Sharma, and outgoing head coach Rahul Dravid. Two buses were stationed outside the T3 Terminal to transport the players to ITC Maurya Sheraton, where they were greeted with traditional Bhangra dancers and the beat of dhol.
