Former India captain Sourav Ganguly paid tribute to his coaches, including Greg Chappell on the occasion of Teachers’ Day on Monday. Ganguly and Chappell had a public fallout in the mid-2000s after the Australian had replaced John Wright in the role.
The captain-coach relationship soon turned sour even as his form came under the scanner. Dada was sacked as captain and was dropped from the ODI side in 2005 and the Test team in 2006. However, in his typical style, Ganguly made a stunning comeback scoring a plethora of runs before announcing his retirement in 2008.
Major missing Debo Mitra, John Wright, my favourite one ,Gary Kirsten and Greg. Happy Teachers’ Day!

His best score of 239 came against Pakistan after his comeback, with God of Offside scoring 1106 runs in 10 matches at a staggering average of 61.44. While the controversies surrounding the fallout were severe, the now BCCI president admits that it ultimately made him a better person.
“What happened during that phase made me a better person. My mental strength and physical strength was furthered. I practised a lot. It was as if I went back to being a 19-year-old. I had to fight for my place in the side, I was sometimes in and sometimes out. But I never wanted to give up, I never went away from pursuing my dream” Ganguly added.
Ganguly retired from international cricket in 2008, finishing as one of the most successful captains and batters to have played for India. The former skipper went on to become the BCCI president in 2019 and has been at the helm of Indian cricket ever since.
