Tamim Iqbal Retirement: After announcing his retirement from International Cricket after the 1st ODI of Bangladesh vs Afghanistan series, Tamim Iqbal has decided to make a U-turn on his retirement plans after he met with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her residence on Friday, July 7. Tamim was also joined by former Bangladeshi skipper Mashrafe Mortaza and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan.
After Bangladesh’s defeat in the first match of the series by 17 runs on Thursday, Tamim came to address the press and announced his immediate retirement from international cricket. The opener couldn’t hold back his tears as he announced that he’d no longer represent his country.
After Tamim’s emotional press conference and retirement, fans criticised the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and its president, Nazmul Hassan. Hassan had earlier questioned the former captain’s professionalism after the southpaw admitted that he was not 100 percent fit but still decided to play.

After Tamim’s shock retirement, BCB announced that wicketkeeper-batsman Liton Das would lead the ODI side for the remainder of the series.
“It is difficult to say whether we will miss him. If I am injured today, the team will not miss me,” Liton Das told reporters.
“Going forward, newcomers will keep coming. Someday we will also go,” he added. “Since he is not there, we should not talk much about that topic.”
“None of us could realise this decision was coming,” he said.
“He gave the Bangladesh team a lot for so many years and led the team. I and all our teammates respect his decision.” he said.
However, this new development means that Liton’s position as the ODI captain of the Bangladeshi side hangs in the balance.
