India will begin their preparation for the T20 World Cup 2024 with the three-match IND vs AFG series commencing from Thursday. More than this series, IPL 2024 could turn out to be crucial, especially for seniors such as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, in order to cement their spots in the squad for the marquee event.
Gavaskar’s ‘out of the box’ idea for Ro-Ko at T20 World Cup 2024
Sunil Gavaskar has a rather strange idea of how Rohit and Kohli could still be a part of the squad, if they don’t make the cut for a spot in the XI. Speaking to Star Sports, the ex-cricketer opined that the team should take along the Ro-Ko combo with them, even if they were dropped from the side. He defended his views by stating that the experience of the duo would enhance the positivity at the team dugout.
“I will also say that, it’s an out-of-the-box suggestion, you can take them along with the team as well, if you cannot pick them in the 14 (15), because of their experience. If Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are in the dugout, imagine what will be the team’s confidence,” Gavaskar said.
Ahead of the IND vs AFG series, former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar had a unique suggestion for the BCCI about the senior players and their form with respect to the WC. Speaking to Star Sports, Gavaskar noted that the IPL will be crucial as it will be the current form. Pointing out that the event was in June, the ex-India star stated that whoever has performance under their belt in March, April and May should be considered for the WC squad.
Gavaskar went on too add that even if Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli perform only in 5 out of 14 matches, they could still be picked on the basis of their experience.
“The World Cup is in June. So whoever has good form in March, April and May should be given consideration first, that performance should be given consideration. Along with that, I will also say that even if Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have an ordinary IPL, but they score runs there, you cannot score runs in every match, but suppose they make good contributions in five out of 14 matches, you will have to take advantage of their experience, and you can probably pick them in the team,” Gavaskar said.
