Shakib Al Hasan – The Player of the Match!

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was adjudged man of the match for his valuable contributions with both bat and ball – 46 with the bat & 4-9 with the ball.

Shakib also equaled Shahid Afridi’s record of most wickets in T20 World Cup with his 4-9 against Papua New Guinea. Both all-rounders have picked up 39 wickets each in the T20 World Cup history since it began in 2007.

Bangladesh post 181/7 on the board: Opting to bat, Bangladesh did not get off to an ideal start as they lost the opener, Mohammad Naim, in the very first over. Kabua Morea dismissed M Naim for a duck. Liton Das and Shakib Al Hasan then managed a 50 runs partnership for the second wicket when PNG bounced back in the contest by taking wickets of Liton (29) and Mushfiqur Rahim (5) in quick succession. By the 12th over, The Bangla Tigers were reduced to 72/3.

Shakib continued to play and fell short of just four runs from a well-deserved fifty, eventually being dismissed at 46 runs by PNG skipper Asad Vala in the 14th over.

Mahmudullah hits fastest fifty of the edition: After Shakib Al Hasan’s departure, Bangladesh skipper Mahmudullah ensured not to lose momentum and slammed a 27-ball 50 – the fastest of the ongoing edition.  Bangladesh added 68 runs in the final four overs and posted a daunting total of 181/7 on the back of Mohammad Saifuddin’s little cameo of 19 off 6 deliveries.

Papua New Guinea bundled out for 97: Chasing 182, PNG was put on the back foot right from the very start as the side lost four wickets inside the first six overs and the team was reduced to 17/4. PNG was never able to recover from the horrible start they got, and in the end, Bangladesh bundled out PNG for 97 inside 19.3 overs to complete a comprehensive 84-run win.
