T20 World Cup: Chris Gayle semi-retired: West Indies legend and self-proclaimed ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle on Saturday clarified that he is not yet retiring from international cricket. The 42-year-old said that yes it was his last World Cup game but he had not made a decision to retire and was just having fun in the game against Australia. The Men in Maroon played its last game in the ongoing T20 World Cup on Saturday against Australia in Abu Dhabi. While it was Dwayne Bravo’s official last outing in Maroon, Chris Gayle too received Guard of honor from both teams and praises from the entire cricketing world for his illustrious career.

However, amidst all the greetings and good wishes, the Universe Boss clarified that he hasn’t retired yet but that the end of his international career is near.

Speaking in an ICC’s post-match Facebook live show, Chris Gayle says, “I was just having some fun today.”

Chris Gayle earlier dropped a couple of big hints on his retirement in the match against Australia. He celebrated his dismissal as he returned to the pavilion, and also give away his gloves to the fans. At the end of the match, he was also given a guard of honour on his way off the field alongside the retiring Dwanye Bravo.

“I was just having some fun today,” he said. “Put everything that happened aside. I was just interacting with the fans in the stand and just having some fun seeing as it’s going to be my last World Cup game.”

“I’d love to play one more World Cup. But I don’t think they will allow me.

Chris Gayle hails from Jamaica and is hoping to exit the international stage in front of his home fans in Jamaica.

“It’s been a phenomenal career. I didn’t announce any retirement but they actually give me one game in Jamaica to go in front of my home crowd, then I can say ‘hey guys, thank you so much.’ Let’s see. If not, I’ll announce it long time and then I’ll be joining DJ Bravo in the backend and say thanks to each and everyone but I can’t say that as yet,” Gayle further said in the live chat show.

Gayle has scored 1899 runs in 79 T20Is at an average of 28.11 and a strike rate of 137.31.  he has hit two centuries and 14 half-centuries and & has also picked up 20 wickets in the shortest format.

An all-format legend, Gayle has 7214 runs in 103 Tests and 10480 runs in 301 ODIs. His last ODI appearance came in 2019 while he hasn’t played a Test match since 2014.
