T20 World Cup: 5 big stars that were omitted from Australia’s squad for the mega event – A number of A-listers returned to the fray as Australia announced their T20 World Cup squad ahead of the mega event in October. Captain Aaron Finch will continue to lead the side while Pat Cummins has been named deputy, who returns alongside Steve Smith, David Warner and Glenn Maxwell. Josh Inglis also earned his maiden call up to the side beating some serious competition for places to make it to the team.

However, while a host of superstars have returned to the team, there are still many notable absentees who missed out on a berth to the T20 World Cup in UAE next month.

T20 World Cup: 5 big IPL stars that were omitted from Australia’s squad for the mega event

1. Jhye Richardson

One of the most expensive buys of the IPL 2021 auction, but his career has seen a downward slide since the big bucks landed in his account. Jhye Richardson struggled against New Zealand and in the first phase of the IPL before opting out of the series against Bangladesh and West Indies. The 24-year-old thus will return home from the UAE after his IPL 2021 duties for Punjab Kings.

2. Riley Meredith

Riley Meredith, another Big Bash superstar, failed to make the cut for Australia’s T20 World Cup squad. Meredith had a forgettable IPL earlier this year with the Punjab Kings and did not do well in the chances received against West Indies and Bangladesh. With competition for places especially among fast bowlers being very high, Riley Meredith will be watching on from the sidelines as the likes of Hazlewood and Co. lead the attack at the T20 World Cup.

3. Andrew Tye

Andrew Tye did well in Bangladesh, picking up five wickets at a strike rate of 13.40 and has done considerably well over the last few years whenever given the chance. However, with the likes of Pat Cummins, Kane Richardson returning for Australia’s T20 WC campaign, the selectors had to make the tough call and Andrew Tye was one of the many to miss out. Tye surprisingly missed out on a berth in the reserves as well, but now will turn his attention to the upcoming IPL 2021 Phase 2.

4. Chris Lynn

Chris Lynn is a global T20 superstar but his stocks in the IPL and the Australian national team have dipped considerably. A consistent performer in the Big Bash League, Lynn was picked up by the Mumbai Indians, and scored 49 in the only innings he played in IPL 2021. The T20 superstar hasn’t played for Australia since 2018, but with the likes of Ben McDermott, Josh Philippe and Alex Carey struggling, Lynn’s experience could have come in handy during the T20 World Cup.

5. Josh Phillipe

One of Big Bash’s bonafide stars, Josh Philipe struggled to come good in national colours as he juggled around batting spots in the team during the tour of West Indies ad Bangladesh. An average of just 13.8 in international T20s will be a cause of concern for the 24-year-old and he saw the axe with both David Warner and Aaron Finch returning to the fold. Philipe was part of the RCB side but opted out, and it remains to be seen whether the Australian will return to the side in Phase 2.
